Welcome

The Jocelyn Solis Lecture Series on Human Development and Globalization/Jocelyn Solis Fund

The primary activity of the Jocelyn Solis Fund is to organize a Lecture Series at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York each year. Those of us who knew Jocelyn Solis as a student, colleague, friend, and family member felt robbed of her intelligent, inspiring, and loving presence, not to mention her infectious laugh and commitment to social development and social justice. A Steering Committee created the Jocelyn Solis Fund to disseminate and advance the legacy of Dr. Solis’ research. Many students, colleagues, former professors, family members, and friends responded to our announcement of the Jocelyn Solis Fund in the fall of 2004, thereby creating resources for an Inaugural Lecture and, we hope, a continuing Lecture Series.

Please save the date: May 10, 2007 for the 2007 Lecture in the Jocelyn Solis Lecture Series
Professor Ana Celia Zentella will present a lecture entitled, Language socialization in Latino families and communities: An anthro-political perspective. Focusing on issues related to the following abstract, Dr. Zentella’s talk will be informative and provocative for discussion with the audience:

The new Latino diversity in the USA challenges traditional approaches to the
study of socialization to language and through language. An anthro-political
perspective sees through the language smokescreen that obscures ideological,
structural, and political elements that construct some ways of speaking or
raising children as inferior, ensuring the reproduction of inequality.

Ana Celia Zentella is Professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of California at San Diego. She is author of numerous articles, author of Growing up Bilingual: Puerto Rican children in New York (Blackwell, 1997), and Editor-Author of Building on Strength: Language and Literacy in Latino Families and Communities (Columbia TC Press, 2005). Professor Zentella was previously a member of the faculty at Hunter College..

The 2007 lecture is sponsored by the Jocelyn Solis Fund in Human Development and Globalization. Contributions are always appreciated for ongoing support of the lecture series and related events.

Sincerely and hoping to see you in May,

The Steering Committee for Jocelyn Solis Fund and Lecture Series in
